Situated above the Tropic of Cancer and just off the African coast and in a very privileged situation you will find the Canarian Archipelago one of the ultimate paradises of the world, of which Tenferife is the largest.

Puerto de la Cruz is situated in the North of the Island and forms part of the Orotava Valley and in a hollow of some 150 squared kilometres which reaches down to the Atlantic Ocean.  The coast of Puerto de la Cruz has steep cliffs, a feature which you will findin the North of the Island and above all in the areas of Punta Brava and Martiánez.   It's situation gives the Island its extremely mild,temporate and moderate climate all year round without any great or extreme changes between maximum and minimum temperatures.
This fenomenal is thanks to a series of natural factors due to its proximity to the Tropic of Cancer.  Scientific statistics show that Puerto de la Cruz has more than 1.900 hours of sun each year.Temperatures generally remain betwee 22 degrees maximum and 15 degrees minimum and an average of 18 degrees overall.  The humidity is generally around 75 percent.  The annual rainfall is around 460mm spread over an average of  75 days per year.

La humedad relativa es del 75 por ciento. La precipitación media anual roza los 460 mm., repartida en 75 días de lluvia de media por año.


 

 
Puerto de la Cruz is situated in the North of the Island of Tenerife in the Orotava Valley next to the municpalities of Los Realejos and La Orotava.  It has 8.173 km2 and is the smallest municipality in the Canary Islands.  It has an altitude of some 9 metres above sea level and its highest point is the volcanic cone of Las Arenas (montaña de la horca) with 249 metes.

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the pioneering touristic towns of the Canaries.  Its inhabitants are known as Portuenses and its most authentic inhabitants are known as Ranilleros, this name is particularly given to the people who live in the area of Ranilla which is an area of the town with the most renowned fame for fishing.

If you wish to enjoy the sea,then this Northern town has much to offer the tourist such as its black sand coves, the salt water pool complex known as the Lago Martiánez, and the black sand beaches at Playa Jardín, Punta Brava and Martiánez  beach which was designed by the famous César Manrique, a complex where design and nature blend together to make a very attractive location.  There is also the Botanical Gardens where you can find plants and species from more than 5 continents and not forgetting the Casino and the famous Loro Park which deserve praise and commendation from all  its visitors.

The fiestas are another great attractive feature of this town and moreover their unmistakable culture and passion.
In the first place, we must mention the famous CARNAVALS - in February - which take place both in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz and are the most famous fiestas of touristic interest. In order to celebrate this famous carnaval an international project of this celebration was set up beween  Puerto de la Cruz and the German town of Düsseldorf culminating in a carnaval exchange which dates back some 25 years.

One of the most local and traditional fiesta is that of the Day of the Crosses, 3rd May, which coincides with the commemoration of the founding of the town.  It is the custom to decorate all crosses and hermitages with flowers.
In June, there is the celebration of the Día de San Juan (St. John's Day) when bonfires are made and the people swim in the fishing harbour with the herds of goats, a custom  which dates back to aboriginal  times.

In the month of July there are the local fiestas in honour of the Gran Poder de Dios y Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Carmen.  These fiestas Del Carmen are the biggest in the town and among the programme of events the most famous is the embarkation of the statue of the Virgen del Carmen and the flying of model airplanes.
Another curious fiesta is that of the Los Cacharros, which is in honour of San Andres (Saint Andrew) on the 29th November, which generally is to celebrate and remember the opening of the bodegas when the new wines come out and this is celebrated by dragging and pulling all sorts of metal which make noise through the streets of the town.
Another important event in the fiesta calendar being  more cultural than fiesta is the International festival of Ecological cinema showing the wonderful nature of the Canary Islands and which to date has been celebrated three times.
